Diabetes in Motion is a community exercise project for people with type 2 diabetes, implemented in Vila Real since 2014, through a partnership between the Municipality of Vila Real, the University of Trás-os -Montes and Alto Douro, ACES Douro I – Marão and Douro Norte and the Hospital Center of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro. Coordination is ensured by the National Program for the Promotion of Physical Activity and the National Diabetes Program of the General Directorate of Health.
This multi-institutional and multidisciplinary intervention initiative represents an articulated effort by society to provide a concrete and effective solution to physical exercise for this population.
Diabetes is one of the main public health problems in our country (there are approximately 1 million people with this chronic disease in Portugal) and physical activity is one of the mainstays of treatment, improving metabolic control , reducing cardiovascular risk and increasing functionality and quality of life.
In the municipality of Vila Real, the Diabetes in Movement program regularly follows around 120 users. Participants are referred through the Diabetes Consultations of the Centro Hospitalar de Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, the Mateus Personalized Health Care Unit, the Fénix Family Health Unit, the Corgo Family Health Unit and Nuno Big Family Health Unit.
