This is the conclusion of a study published in the scientific journal Nature Communication, where experimental animal models have been used. Thus, it was possible to discover that prolonged exposure to this dye impairs intestinal health and promotes inflammation.

The researchers explain, in a press release, that the dye “directly interrupts the function of the intestinal barrier and increases the production of serotonin, a hormone/neurotransmitter present in the intestine, which subsequently alters the composition of the intestinal microbiota, leading to a increased sensitivity. to colitis”.

Additionally, they also claim that it is a common ingredient in sweets, soft drinks, dairy products and some cereals. It has been used more and more in recent years and is used to add not only color but also texture to foods.

The researchers say there is a need to continue to study this link and to understand the effect of food colorings at the experimental, epidemiological and clinical level.
