A BOLA – Trafficking network dismantled in Spain (with a Portuguese team investigated) (Cycling)

The Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Spanish Civil Guard dismantled a network of trafficking in illegal substances aimed at athletes led by doctor Marcos Maynar, linked to the doping case of the Portuguese team LA-MSS, in May 2008, and by Vicente Belda, former sports director of Kelme, involved in the famous operation Puerto, in 2006, of which he was cleared.

Initiated in January 2021, Operation Ilex resulted in the identification of eight people, accused of drug trafficking and doping, according to a note released by the Civil Guard. From their headquarters in the province of Cáceres, the suspects distributed banned substances to athletes from various sports in Portugal and the Spanish provinces of Guipúzcoa and Castellón.

After being detained by the Civil Guard for a crime and drug trafficking, Marcos Maynar was subjected to the penalty of identity and residence, from May. Others indicted include Vicente Belda’s son, David Belda Garcia, a former cyclist suspended for four years in 2017 for testing positive for EPO and currently a masseur for WorldTeam Kazakh Astana; the Colombian cyclist Miguel Angel López of this team – he was under investigation but is now targeted as a witness – and the former cyclists Luís Vicente Otín and Angel Vásquez Iglésias, the latter suspended for doping between 2007 and 2010, although he participated in uncontrolled amateur competitions with the use of prohibited substances.

Possible clients include Ruben Bernal, swimming coach at a club in Castellón, and one of his underage athletes, footballers and Glassdrive-Q8-Anicolor sports director Ruben Pereira – through the end of the 2021 season sponsored by Efapel, who gave the name to the team – who, contacted by A BOLA, denied any involvement in this network of traffickers. “We were heard, in 2021, on the training plans prepared by Nacho [intermediário de Marcos Maynar] for our team. A situation that arose after the seizure of computers by the Civil Guard.

The confiscated documents contained the training plans of many athletes, including those of Efapel. [em 2021, a Efapel patrocinava a atual Glassdrive, mas desistiu deste apoio para abraçar novo projeto que não é visado nesta investigação]?? After the explanations given about our relationship with Nacho, we never had any more information and we were surprised by the news now released. We ended our relationship with this gentleman in August 2021, we have never had anything to do with Marcos Maynar and even less with the use of illicit substances. Our link was exclusively in the training plan, ”said the manager.
