The message, although not directly, got through: Serena Williams will retire from tennis after the next US Open. The tennis player is on the cover of Vogue magazine, which talks about goodbye, and Serena highlights an upcoming goodbye.
The 40-year-old American speaks, on Instagram, of “countdown. “I have no words to thank you. You have helped me in so many victories and in the conquest of so many trophies. I will miss this version, this girl who played tennis. And I will miss you”, writes Serena in the article.
“I never liked the word retirement,” says the holder of 23 Grand Slam trophies. “There comes a time in life when we have to decide to go in a different direction. That time is never easy when you love something so much. And, my God, how I love tennis. countdown has started. I have to focus on being a mother, on discovering something different,” she explains.
The US Open is played from August 29 to September 11.
