THE BALL – United win in Melbourne in reunion with Nani (videos) (Australia)

Second game of the Manchester United tour, second victory. After easily beating Liverpool 4-0 in Thailand, the team went to Australia, and curiously there they found it harder to beat Melbourne Victory, 4-1, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Several Portuguese are in play, with Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes on the red side in the first half (Erik Ten Hag changed 10 for the second half), Roderick Miranda for the Australians. Nani started on the bench, he was signed this week and has only had two days of training, having joined at 87, as United duly pointed out.

The home side got off to a better start, with Folami tricking Maguire and Lindelof, catching the United defense on the wrong foot, only for Ikonomidis to score in the 5th minute. Ten Hag will not have liked it at all. Yet United would return before the break, by McTominay (43) and Martial (45+1).

After starting with Heaton; Dalot, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw; McTominay, Fred; Elanga, Fernandes, Sancho and Martial, for the second half the coach kept Heaton in goal and Malacia, Telles, Bailly, Laird came on; Iqbal, Savage, Van de Beek; Chong, Rashford and Amad.

Rashford, with the captain’s armband, made it 3-1 in the 78th minute and Lupescu extended the England lead with an own goal to over 90.

United remain in Melbourne, where they face Crystal Palace on Tuesday and travel to Perth, where they face Aston Villa on the 23rd.

A friendly match with Atlético Madrid will follow in Oslo (Norway) on the 30th and the last pre-season game will take place at Old Trafford, against Rayo Vallecano, on July 31. It remains to be seen whether Ronaldo’s situation will already be decided: the Premier League starts on August 7 with a reception in Brighton.
