youResearch by scientists at Harvard University suggests that cold showers can help fight obesity because they reduce inflammation in fatty tissue.
Published in the scientific journal Nature, the study subjected mice to a high-fat Western diet. Then some were exposed to a temperature of around 4°C and others were kept in an environment in which their body did not need to produce heat.
Rats exposed to cold showed weight loss. According to the scientists, cold exposure also decreased inflammation in fatty tissues and caused them to have better blood sugar control.
It’s not yet well established, but scientists think it’s because rodents exposed to cold had to produce a greater amount of heat than mice that were subjected to a normal temperature.
Ice baths are becoming popular as a fitness strategy for muscle recovery and anxiety control, but their benefits are still not scientifically proven.
