Grasshopper Manufacture and Nagoshi Studio talk about NetEase in official interviews



NetEase Games has released two short interview videos with Grasshopper Manufacture President and CEO Goichi “Suda 51” Suda and Nagoshi Studio President and CEO Toshihiro Nagoshi.

The Chinese company has acquired Grasshopper Manufacture, a developer of more heroesin October 2021 and established Nagoshi Studio, led by the series creator yakuzain January 2022.

Goichi Suda: “Well, about that…to quote someone…’I’m thrilled and terrified to be chosen…’ That’s how I felt when I started Grasshopper. I had the habit of throwing up little bits. You know, like… just little bits of vomit sometimes.

At Grasshopper, our studio has been pretty independent for a long time. Now that we have joined the NetEase group, we have received a lot of support to create games.

We recently opened our new studio, which we named ‘Yabukiri Studio’. So we went with Yabukiri Studio. One of the unique things about Grasshopper is that I don’t have my own “president’s office”. Everyone’s in my line of sight, and I’m in everyone’s line of sight too… We’ve been doing this since the company was founded, and I really didn’t want to change that.

So I founded this studio called ‘Grasshopper’ and I think it represents a kind of ideal, ‘complete’ studio. So the games that we’re making in this studio… I mean the really, really cool brand new games, we’re going to keep making those, and I think everybody’s going to be really impressed…

I wonder when can I announce this…? Maybe at the end of the year? I’m not sure… It might end up being next year, let’s see how it goes. Anyway, I want to hurry up and show everyone what we’re up to.

These days, I’ve been working on back-to-back projects and would like to start a second project when the time comes… I want to do a project focused on the young team at Grasshopper and have them create in their own new style of play. First of all, I’d like to start with that…and then see if we can get a second and a third title. I really want to do it right and make it work.

I can’t wait to show everyone Grasshopper 5.1. We are reborn. It’s almost like losing our skin. Grasshopper has gone through several releases so far, but this latest release is truly drastically different. I think the best thing we can do is keep bringing new games to the world. So keep an eye out for some really cool stuff, folks.

Studio Nagoshi

If you were asked to describe Nagoshi Studio in three words, what would they be?

Toshihiro Nagoshi: “The first word I would say is ‘globality’. For me, instead of spending my time producing, I prefer to do things more efficiently. “Speed” would be the second word. But the most important is ‘Opening’, which I also put on our homepage. After all, we are a team working on a game. For a team, I believe communication is key. That’s why I chose the word “openness” to emphasize our attitude towards communication.

How does the partnership with NetEase Games influence the studio’s vision?

Nagoshi: “From a development point of view, I think we are professional console games, while NetEase has very popular mobile games, that is, online games. Their games are very popular among gamers. So we both have technologies that the other doesn’t. We can learn something from each other. In the meantime, we will also maintain our existing forces. In terms of technologies and skills, absorption and learning, we can become better. This is the relationship that I want to develop between us.

Due to COVID-19, I cannot go to China. It’s really a pity. We are working on different methods of communication to exchange ideas about what we are doing now. When we run into problems, if we can communicate, if there’s an open section like this to improve both of us, I think we can maintain a healthy partnership. And I will make it my own project.
