heart attack The most common warning signs of this race against time

Dor in the chest does not mean a heart attack. Although this is the classic symptom of this race against time, which affects more than 10,000 Portuguese a year, there are other mild, intermittent and sometimes quite misleading warning signs.

Myocardial infarction occurs when blood flow to the heart is suddenly blocked in one of the coronary arteries and this organ does not receive the blood and oxygen it needs. Smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, overweight, physical inactivity, stress and age are risk factors.

Simultaneous pain in the chest, neck, arms, back and stomach, which is accompanied by general malaise, sweating, nausea and vomiting can be symptoms of acute myocardial infarction. However, when these symptoms appear, the situation is usually already more serious, indicates the Tua Saúde portal.

However, changing this reality is in the hands of each of us. Maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, monitoring cholesterol levels, consuming salt and alcoholic beverages in moderation can help prevent a heart attack.

According to the Hospital da Luz portal, you should contact 112 immediately or seek help from someone if you experience the following symptoms for more than five minutes:

  • Pain, pressure, discomfort or tightness in the middle of the chest;
  • Abdominal pain, which may spread to the arms, back and jaw.

These symptoms may be accompanied by:

  • Cold sweat;
  • shortness of breath;
  • Dizziness;
  • Feeling of weakness;
  • nausea;
  • vomiting;
  • Unusual weakness;
  • arrhythmia;
  • Sensation of impending death.

Usually, according to the Portuguese Cardiology Society, symptoms last longer than 20 minutes, but they can also be intermittent.
