Luís Miguel Henrique, lawyer for Jorge Jesus and commentator for CNN Portugal, admitted that the former Benfica coach was approached by Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr of Saudi Arabia.
However, as Jorge Jesus had declared to the Coaches Forum, his return to action should not occur before May: “I spoke with Jorge a few minutes before entering the studio. I had already spoken in the morning, but sometimes during the day there is a lot going on.
“It is not true that there is a signed contract, because it is not from now. The approaches of Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal himself were made as early as January and were denied by Jorge. Jorge’s image is extremely positive in Saudi Arabia and, although the rivalry between Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal is not so strong, because the culture is different there, it would always be to go to a rival”, explained Luís Miguel, the goal of Al-Nasr.
The Portuguese coach also had the option of returning to Al-Hilal, but closed the door: “In the case of Al-Hilal, it was the players themselves who tried to talk to the president when they learned that Jorge was absent from Benfica and when it was also known that Leonardo Jardim had not stayed. But he didn’t want to go.
“Until May, it will wait. At the start of the next season, it will decide your life. In the short term he will work, because 60/90 days is the short term in the life of a coach”, stressed Luís Miguel Henrique, adding: “In these last 60 days, the approaches of the Saudi Arabia, other European countries, In Brazil, the answer has always been the same: ‘I will wait until May and in May I will decide’”.
It is recalled that at the time of Benfica’s departure (in December 2021), the red club explained that it would respect “all contractual obligations until the end of the existing employment relationship or until Jorge Jesus and his technical team assume a new professional commitment.” Jesus had a contract with Benfica until the end of the current season.
Jorge Jesus’ lawyer and CNN Portugal commentator also recalled an extremely important aspect: the tax issue. “The decision to go to Saudi Arabia has another implication: it is the loss of some flexibility in terms of managing your life,” he said.
“He had this experience in the past, we haven’t had a conversation about it, but if one day it is serious, it will be necessary to think that if he emigrates this year, he will only be able to return to Portugal. in January 2024. Is he available for this stage? Otherwise, these amounts that we are talking about will not even be half of that”, concluded Luís Miguel Henrique.
