“I felt that I had to have continuity in the selection, so I went to Benfica”

At 34, Otamendi is in his second season at Benfica. He swapped Manchester City for the Reds to continue betting on the Argentina national team, he said.

Nicolás Otamendi spoke in the flash interview after the draw between Argentina and Ecuador (1-1), in the last round of the South American qualification for the 2022 World Cup, where the team of Albiceleste will be present. The centre-back mentioned that he moved to Benfica so he can continue to be called up to the national team.

“I’m having a good season [no Benfica]. I felt there needed to be continuity in the national team, so I changed clubs. We are having a good campaign in the Champions League and it helps to be called up to the national team because there are a lot of youngsters coming,” he said in statements on TyC Sports television.

“We have a very good competitive group. There is a healthy competition between everyone and in training everyone gives their best. We all want to be in the World Cup,” added Otamendi, who played the full ninety minutes.

The Eagles player is expected to return to Portugal today. On Friday there is a game at Braga’s home.
