The Portuguese Under-17 team, in the third and final round of the Elite Round of the 2022 European Championship qualifiers, relating to Group 8, with a single point lead, did not facilitate a millimeter and applied an old-fashioned rout, rarely seen these days, for an incredible 9-1 against Finland.
Curiously, the Nordics opened the scoring, at 2′, by Talvitie, causing a small scare and catapulting the Portuguese, commanded by José Lima, for a powerful reaction, ending the hit and run only on the ninth goal: Afonso Moreira (11′), João Gonçalves (13′), José Rodrigues (45’+1, 60′ and 65′), Rodrigo Ribeiro (74′, 80′ and 89′) and Diogo Monteiro (90’+2).
At the individual level, the focus is on hat tricks of José Rodrigues and Rodrigo Ribeiro on a fabulous course, Portugal winning all three games and finishing the last phase before the trip to the Euros with 15 goals scored and only three conceded.
In the other Group 8 match, the Republic of Ireland and Bulgaria drew 2-2. The Bulgarians finished in second place with 4 points, followed by Finland (3 points) and the Republic of Ireland (1 point).
