Van Damme, Belgian goalkeeper, dies of leukemia at 28

Michael Van DammeThe 28-year-old Belgian soccer goalkeeper from Cercle Brugge has died of leukemia, his club announced on Tuesday.

The athlete has played less than 50 matches in the Belgian top division since being diagnosed with the disease in 2016, after recovering in an early phase before the fatal relapse in 2020.

“There are no words to describe how we feel, even though it hasn’t been going well for some time. Miguel, your perseverance and strength to fight through setbacks has been admirable. You are an inspiration to everyone,” reads a message from Cercle Brugge.
