THE BALL – Ricardo Gomes recalls Nélson Veríssimo and wishes good luck to Rui Costa (Benfica)

Ricardo Gomes ended his career at Benfica in 1995/96, returning to Portugal after four successful seasons at Paris-SG. The defender fills his time with the Eagles with 140 games and 26 goals, a total of four seasons.

“There were several friendships built in a large bathhouse. I had great coaches like Toni and Jesualdo. Many teammates that I remember, it was great to have reunited with Paulo Madeira, Dimas and José Carlos in Dragão. At heart, Benfica supporters. These are four years that allowed me three titles and, unfortunately, a lost European Cup final, ”he observes.

“I left Brazil in 1988 and I had no idea what I was going to find, I didn’t know where I was going. There was no internet, nor minimal information. It was Eusébio’s Benfica, that’s what everyone knew! Plus the titles of the sixties, national supremacy. I realize that it is much more than Eusébio, I meet Chalana and Diamantino. I have Valdo by my side, a friend to this day. I couple with Mozer, then Aldair and then William. Later it was a different reality, I trained the defense with Paredão and King”, curiously challenges a professor of Nélson Veríssimo in 1995, when the current coach of Benfica moved up to the main team.

“I remember well, he was a very calm boy, I know he had a good career, but I did not follow him,” he says, plunging into the context of the call to bar.

“He arrived at a time to replace Jesus, an experienced coach with a history made in Portugal and abroad. It was a behind-the-scenes thing and it wasn’t easy. But Veríssimo appears with Rui Costa and, putting those elements together, makes you think things are going to be different. All the luck to them. I’m a big fan of Rui, I still don’t know Rui’s president, the last time I spoke to him was in 2013. It’s an interesting profile and I’m starting from a few readings,” he warns. .
