The World Rugby Federation announced on Monday the formation of an independent commission to analyze Portugal’s complaint. At stake is the irregular use of a player by Spain.
South African-born prop Gavin van der Berg arrived in Spain in 2018 but will not have served the three consecutive years the World Rugby Federation determines to grant a player eligibility. However, the Spain international has featured in both matches for the Netherlands, qualifying for the 2023 World Cup.
This problem had already been mentioned by Russia, which was nevertheless excluded from the competitions. If the World Rugby Federation confirms this illegality, Spain would be deprived of second place, which would pass to Romania and Portugal would rise to third, thus competing in the repechage tournament for the World Cup.
