The Portuguese coach has signed a new contract, valid until 2024.
Palmeiras announced the renewal of the contract with Abel Ferreira for another two years, the link with the Brazilian club to be extended until December 2024. According to ‘Globoesporte’, the Portuguese coach will earn 6.7 million euros per season.
The value was denied by the Brazilian club, but the news organization kept the information in the face of Palmeiras’ denial.
The Portuguese coach thus becomes the highest paid coach in the history of South America. Neither Gallardo, Jorge Jesus, Sampaoli or Tite obtained such high values.
Abel is Palmeiras’ greatest international champion after winning the 2020 and 2021 Libertadores Cup and the 2022 South American Supercup, overtaking Luiz Felipe Scolari, who guided the team in winning the 1999 Libertadores Cup, until then l club’s most successful coach.
In just over 16 months at the helm of the club, Abel Ferreira has overtaken Vanderlei Luxemburgo in the final, nine, already counting the 2022 Paulista Championship, with four titles (he also won the 2020 Brazilian Cup) and four second places so far. ‘now, being only behind the record holder “Felipão”, with 10 (five titles and five second places).
The Portuguese is still the sixth manager in the history of Palmeiras to reach more than 100 games in a single spell at the club “alviverde”, equaling the achievements of Scolari, Vanderlei Luxemburgo, Brandão, Rubens Minelli and Gilson Kleina.
Since his debut on the Palmeiras bench on November 5, 2020, Abel Ferreira has played 124 games, with 69 wins, 27 draws and 28 losses.
If he fulfills the new contract to the end, Abel will also become the longest-lived coach ahead of Palmeiras.
