João Almeida finished the 101st edition of the Volta a Catalunya by bike in third place.
Sergio Higuita, a Colombian from BORA-hansgrohe, won the race, 16 seconds ahead of the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz and 52 seconds ahead of the Portuguese from UAE Team Emirates.
Andrea Bagioli (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) won the 7th and final stage, which ended with a circuit in Barcelona with six climbs to the top of Montjuic Castle.
João Almeida attacked on the final climb, but couldn’t make the difference. He arrived in a group of about twenty men.
Almeida, who took seventh place last year, now achieves an unprecedented podium for a Portuguese cyclist in the Volta a Catalunya. Remember that the rider from A-dos-Francos was still the race leader one day and won a stage.
