LE BALLON – “The penalties I missed will haunt me all my life” (Italy)

After the defeat against North Macedonia (0-1) and the consequent exclusion from the Qatar-2022 World Cup — Italy failed to enter the competition for the second time in a row — the Italian- Brazilian Jorginho was inconsolable.

“The penalties I missed will haunt me for the rest of my life. go there twice [à marca das grandes penalidades] and not being able to help the team and the country is something that weighs”, he began by saying, in tears, in statements to RAI Sport.

We recall that the midfielder, a Chelsea player, saw a penalty saved by Yann Sommer and another missed during the match against Switzerland (1-1), in the group stage, Italy finishing second in group C and , therefore, forced to play the ‘play-off’ for access to the World Cup, where he has now fallen to North Macedonia.

“It’s hard to explain what happened. It hurts a lot. I’ll be honest, I’m still in disbelief. I don’t think we lacked creativity because we always dominated, played good football and created so many opportunities, but unfortunately we couldn’t take them. People say we have to raise our heads and move on, but it’s difficult,” added Jorginho.
