Cycling: João Almeida is the new leader of Volta a Catalunya

Portuguese cyclist João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) rode this Friday at the head of the Volta a Catalunya by bike, at the end of the fifth and penultimate stage, between La Pobla de Segur and Vilanova i la Geltrú, on a distance of 206.3 kilometers. , won by Ethan Vernon (Quick-Step, 05:21:17).

João Almeida, who left for the stage with the same time as the overall leader, the Colombian Nairo Quintana (Arkea Samsic), managed to improve a second in the second and last intermediate sprint, 12.7 kilometers from the arrival, with the help of Rui Costa, compatriot and teammate, second in the same sprint.

After the last intermediate sprint, the last kilometers were again attacked by Rui Costa, who gained a few meters nine kilometers from the end, but was immediately caught, as was Richard Carapaz (Ineos), who also attacked six kilometers from the finish.

The stage also came to an unfortunate and unfortunate end for Ilan Van Wilder (Quick Step), with a crash just over a kilometer from the finish.

Another Portuguese, Ivo Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates), entered the final sprint of the stage and finished in eighth place, with the same time as Vernon.

In general, João Almeida – who won stage four on Thursday – leads (22:26:09), one second ahead of Nairo Quintana and seven seconds ahead of another Colombian, Sergio Higuita, of BORA-hansgrohe.

The sixth and penultimate stage will take place on Saturday, with 168.5 kilometers starting and ending in the Costa Daurada (Salou-Cambrils).
