Burak Yilmaz did not have an easy evening on Thursday. After scoring the goal that put Turkey in the game against Portugal, the Turkish striker missed the penalty that would have given the underdogs a draw.
After the final whistle, the 36-year-old Lille striker announced the withdrawal from the Turkish national team.
“I didn’t want to leave after such a sad match, it’s true. I apologize to everyone and believe me I have always worn this shirt with great honor. Thanks to all my coaches, but it ended here,” the veteran striker said.
Burak Yilmaz, who made his debut for Turkey in 2006 in a friendly against Azerbaijan, leaves the Turkish team with 77 games played and 31 goals.
