THE BALL – “Benfica is very well delivered to Nélson Veríssimo” (Benfica)

On the second day of the National Coaches Association Forum, which ends today, in Leiria, Rui Vitória was one of the speakers in the morning session. In the end, in statements to the journalists present, the former coach of Benfica left a brief analysis of the work done by Nélson Veríssimo and spoke about the quarter-finals of the Champions League and… Nélson Veríssimo.

“Benfica? There’s no need to talk about it, I don’t want to go there either. I fully understand that you can ask this question to any coach who may appear here, but Benfica are very well delivered to Nélson Veríssimo, to whom I wish good luck, as well as to Rui Costa. My role is to train and not to give an opinion on the problems of the club. I don’t want people to be able to interpret anything, my life is that of a coach. In terms of the Champions League, I foresee an extremely difficult encounter, Liverpool are a very big team. But at this level, and there are two matches, the Portuguese teams, from time to time, shine brightly. Being a two-game tie and with very high levels of motivation, I believe anything can happen,” he stressed.

Regarding his future, Rui Vitória reaffirmed his desire to continue working across borders. “Whoever goes to Russia and Arabia is because he is a coach of the world. I am ready to take on any challenge. Initially, my idea is to continue abroad. I am at a stage in my career with a lot of ambition, but where I need to feel fulfilled. It has a lot to do with the challenge and not with the championship or the team. It has to do with the passion that the project can provoke in me. If that happens, I will go anywhere. Brazil? I am convinced that it is a market that will continue to open up in the near future. I had these opportunities, which didn’t materialize, but the coach is ready to go anywhere because it’s a country that has an immense quality of players and it seems to me that the Portuguese coach can still add something. I predict that more Portuguese coaches will be able to go there, because I think the coaches who are there currently will do a good job and that keeps the doors open. I’m ready for that.”

Talking about the important moment of the national team, which will play this Thursday against Turkey, in the semi-finals of the qualifying play-off for the Qatar World Cup, Rui Vitória showed his confidence in the corner team: “I am positive, as always. Regardless of these recent losses, we have immense quality as a team and as a national team. They will be tough games, against Turkey and then possibly against Italy, but I’m very confident because all our players are used to very high levels of competition. We are at the level of the best in Europe and I believe in the players and the coach.
