Selection: José Sá called to replace Anthony Lopes

José Sá has been called up to replace the injured Anthony Lopes, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) have reported.

The Wolverhampton goalkeeper replaces the Lyon team-mate, deemed “unfit” by the national team’s medical service.

Fernando Santos therefore has one more victim for the 2022 World Cup access play-off, this after also this Monday Tiago Djaló, who was serving under 21, was called up for replace Pepe, positive for covid-19. The center of FC Porto is already isolated.

It was therefore the third change made by the Portuguese coach during the initial call. Like Djaló, Vitinha was also on Rui Jorge’s list, but had to be part of selection A, to replace injured Rúben Neves.

There are several losses for Portugal at the start of the play-off which will dictate their presence in Qatar. Rúben Dias, Nélson Semedo and Renato Sanches are the others out through injury, while João Cancelo has been called up but will only be able to play a possible second game as he is suspended and out of the game with Turkey.

THE the national team has already started the preparation of Thursday’s duel, with Fernando Santos having 14 players in the first training session.

The game against Turkey is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. at the Estádio do Dragão. If they win, Portugal will play the final of Path C also at FC Porto, five days later, against the winner of the clash between Italy and North Macedonia.

The play-off defeat would mean the first absence for Quinas’ side in a major competition this century, after 11 consecutive appearances.
