Russia to work on Mars mission alone after Europa cancels partnership – 3/18/2022 – Science

THE Russia start working on their own mission Marchsuch as the European Space Agency (ESA) suspended a joint project after the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troopsa senior official said on Friday, according to the Interfax news agency.

ESA announced on Thursday that it would be impossible to continue cooperating with Russia on the ExoMars mission. A Russian rocket would carry a European-made space exploration vehicle to Mars this year.

“In the very near future, we will start working on the implementation of a mission to Mars,” said Dmitry Rogozin, director of Roscosmos, the Russian space agency.

According to Interfax, he said he did not believe a space exploration vehicle would be needed because the existing Russian lander designed to carry the vehicle would be able to perform the necessary scientific work.

Rogozin said there were “big doubts” about what the ESA could do without Russia, which already has a rocket, launch site and lander. ESA would need at least six years to develop its own module, he said.

In response to Western sanctions on Russia, Roscosmos suspended cooperation with Europe on space launches and announced that it would no longer supply rocket engines to the United States.
