Dengue fever cases increase by 220% in the state of Piauí, according to Sesapi

The State Department of Health (Sesapi) confirms a 221.6% increase in the number of dengue fever cases compared to the same period in 2021. The data is from the epidemiological bulletin of the 10th epidemiological week of the year .

According to Sesapi data, during the same period in 2021, around 41 municipalities had reported 334 probable cases of the disease, while in 2022 a total of 67 municipalities reported 1074 possible cases.

Also according to the agency, the municipalities that have recorded the highest incidence of cases are: Curimatá, São Pedro do Piauí, Antônio Almeida, Avelino Lopes and Curralinhos. So far, one death from dengue fever has been confirmed in 2022.b

The Secretary of Health, Florentino Neto, points out that the increases recorded in the latest epidemiological bulletins attract the attention of the State leadership and reinforce the importance of protective measures.

“Dengue fever is already well known to us, but we cannot overlook the prevention measures we already have against it. It is important to keep in mind that this is a disease that requires care and that preventing the development of mosquito vectors is one of the main ways to reduce cases of the disease, “explains the Secretary.

The supervisor of entomology at the State Secretariat for Health, Ocimar Alencar, emphasizes that the participation of the population is essential to reverse the situation and for the State to reduce the number of cases each epidemiological week.

He also specifies that the Sesapi teams remain in contact with the municipalities and check the adaptation strategies and asks the population to maintain their role of taking charge of their domestic environment, avoiding places conducive to the development of the vector.

Also according to the supervisor, most of the breeding sites detected by the towns of Piauí are in domestic environments, which reinforces the need for more intense care from the population.

The bulletin also presents epidemiological data on Chikungunya fever, which shows a 665.5% increase in the state compared to the same period in 2021.

The municipalities with the highest incidence of cases are: São Pedro do Piauí, Oeiras, São Julião, Curralinhos and Porto Alegre do Piauí.

According to the data, the state has not recorded any deaths from the disease since 2018, when 06 deaths from the disease were recorded.
