The State Department of Health (Sesapi) confirms a 221.6% increase in the number of dengue cases compared to the same period in 2021. The data is from the Dengue Epidemiological Bulletin, referring to the 10th epidemiological week of the year. While in 2021, during this period, 41 municipalities had reported 334 probable cases of the disease, in 2022 there are already 67 municipalities reporting 1074 probable cases of the disease.
The five municipalities in Piauí with the highest incidence of cases are Curimatá; São Pedro do Piauí; Antonio Almeida; Avelino Lopes and Curralinhos. So far, 2022 has featured one confirmed dengue death. The Secretary of State for Health Florentino Neto points out that the increases recorded in the latest dengue epidemiological bulletins attract the attention of the State leadership and reinforce the importance of preventive measures.
“Dengue fever is already well known to us, but we cannot overlook the prevention measures we already have against it. It is important to keep in mind that this is a disease that requires care and that preventing the development of mosquito vectors is one of the main ways to reduce cases of the disease, “explains the Secretary.
State Department of Health Entomology Supervisor Ocimar Alencar stresses that public participation is key to reversing the situation and for the state to reduce the numbers presented each epidemiological week. “We have an epidemiological increase in cases every week that lights an alert. Our teams stay in contact with the municipalities and verify adaptation strategies. At the same time, we ask the population to maintain their role of taking care of their domestic environment, avoiding places conducive to the development of the vector,” he says.
According to the supervisor, most of the breeding sites detected by the towns of Piauí are in domestic environments, which reinforces the need for more intense care from the population.
The bulletin also presents epidemiological data on Chikungunya fever, where the state records a 662.5% increase in new cases compared to the same period in 2021. São Pedro do Piauí; Oeiras; Saint Julien; Curralinhos and Porto Alegre do Piauí are the municipalities with the highest incidence of cases. Still on Chikungunya fever, the state has not recorded any deaths from the disease since 2018 when 06 deaths from the disease were recorded.
