macOS Monterey 12.3 was released by Apple to bring Universal Control to Mac and iPad users. The new feature, which is currently in beta, lets you use one mouse and one keyboard on your Mac. The new version of macOS also supports spatial audio and new emojis. Along with the macOS Monterey update, Apple released watchOS 8.5, iOS 15.4, and iPadOS 15.4. The iPhone maker has also allowed users to restore Apple Watch firmware directly from the iPhone, without requiring them to visit a nearby service center.
macOS Monterey 12.3: what’s new
One of the biggest changes macOS Monterey 12.3 brings to Mac users is the addition of Universal Control. This new feature was announced during WWDC 2021 in June. It was also expected to be available as part of the original macOS Monterey in October, although Apple delayed the feature.
Universal Control requires iPad to be running on iPadOS 15.4 and iPad and Mac to use a single Apple ID. Devices should also be within a few feet of each other.
Once all the above conditions are met, you can take advantage of Universal Control to use one mouse and one keyboard on your iPad and Mac. You can also drag and drop files between devices using the new feature.
In addition to Universal Control, Apple has included Spatial Audio support in macOS 12.3 specifically for Mac devices with the M1 chip to allow users with supported AirPods to enjoy a surround sound experience. Customizable spatial audio settings for Off, Fixed, and Head Tracked are also available in Control Center when using compatible AirPods on Mac computers with the M1 chip.
macOS Monterey 12.3 brings over 40 new emojis and a new Siri voice, as does iOS 15.4. New emojis include faces, hand gestures, and household objects.
Apple has updated its Podcasts app in macOS Monterey 12.3 which brings episode filters for seasons, played, unplayed, saved and downloaded episodes. Safari Page Translation also added support for Italian and (Traditional) Chinese. Additionally, shortcuts included support for adding, deleting, and querying tags with callbacks. Saved passwords in Safari can also include notes.
The new version of macOS brings bug fixes and improvements that include more accurate battery capacity readings, an update to the Apple TV app to fix sound distortion while watching videos, and a fix Photos app for unintentionally moved photo and video issue while organizing albums.
Apple has also included several security fixes in macOS Monterey 12.3 detailed on the Security Updates page.
iPadOS 15.4: What’s New
Apple released iPadOS 15.4 with features like Universal Control, over 40 emojis, and the updated Siri which includes the new voice. Siri on iPadOS 15.4 can also provide offline time and date information on iPad Pro and later models. Additionally, the new version of iPadOS includes an updated FaceTime that lets you launch SharePlay sessions directly from supported apps.
The iPadOS 15.4 update also includes the ability to adjust volume controls by rotating the iPad. Works with iPad (5th generation and newer), iPad mini (4th and 5th generation), iPad Air 2, iPad Air (3rd and 4th generation) and iPad Pro. There are also updates for iCloud, Safari, Podcasts, News, and Camera apps with few changes.
The update also brings bug fixes to address issues, including one where the keyboard may insert a period between entered numbers. The new version of macOS also fixes a sync issue with iCloud Photo Library where photos and videos don’t sync.
Apple also detailed the security updates that are part of iPadOS 15.4.
watchOS 8.5: What’s new?
Apple Watch users also received watchOS 8.5 with some updates. It offers the ability to authorize Apple TV purchases and subscriptions right from your wrist. You can also use audio cues in Fitness+ with audio feedback of movements visually demonstrated during workouts. Apple’s Fitness+ subscription service has yet to launch in India.
The latest version of watchOS also updates irregular rhythm notifications designed to improve the identification of atrial fibrillation. It is currently available in the United States, Chile, Hong Kong, South Africa, and select regions.
The watchOS 8.5 release also includes a detailed list of fixes on the security updates page.
Users with iOS 15.4 and watchOS 8.5 have a new tool to allow users to recover their Apple Watch wirelessly. Until now, users had to go to a service center to repair Apple Watch firmware if there was an unresolved issue.
Apple has updated its support article, as identified by 9to5Mac, to detail how users can restore Apple Watch firmware.
Make sure your Apple Watch and iPhone are running the latest software and are connected to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. You will now need to place the Apple Watch on the charger and double click the side button on the watch. After that, follow the steps on your iPhone screen to proceed with the firmware rollback.
Apple Watch may display a red exclamation point in some cases. You just need to double click the side button and follow the same steps to recover your Apple Watch in such cases.
You may need to contact Apple Support if your Apple Watch continues to show the red exclamation mark.
