Dengue is already rife in 44 districts of Umuarama; three other regions enter a state of alert

Umuarama added 36 new cases of dengue fever this week, among the 72 notifications recorded in recent days by the Environmental Health Surveillance Service. The bulletin published this Friday 11 indicates a significant increase in the number of new cases, compared to the data of the last few weeks. Since August 1 (beginning of the seasonality) the city has accumulated 103 positive diagnoses for dengue fever. There have been no deaths or serious cases of the disease, but some patients have already required medical attention.

Another important data from the bulletin is that dengue fever has already been recorded in 44 of the 62 localities in which the city is divided to monitor health problems – that is, 70% of the neighborhoods have already had a case of disease. In the division by Basic Health Unit (UBS), the situation is more critical in the Centro de Saúde Escola (CSE) region, which accumulates 38 cases and is facing an epidemic of the disease.

Besides Jardim União (Cohapar I), the regions of UBS Guarani/Anchieta, Posto de Saúde Central and Conjunto Sonho Meu also went on alert this week, with an increase in cases – 5, 9, 10 and 4 positive respectively. The seriousness of the situation is measured by the ratio between the number of positives and the number of inhabitants in the area of each health facility.

There are still no confirmed cases in UBS Bem-Estar, 26 de Junho, Ouro Branco and the districts of Serra dos Dourados, Lovat, Santa Eliza, Roberto Silveira, Nova Jerusalem and Vila Nova União. In the other UBS, there are cases of dengue, but with a low incidence. During the year, the cumulative total of notifications is 474 and currently 24 suspects are under investigation, while 347 have already been dismissed.

Dengue fever is a serious febrile illness caused by a virus transmitted by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. In summer, with the increase in precipitation and higher temperatures, there is an increase in the proliferation of the vector which reproduces in stagnant waters.

The symptoms of dengue fever, chikungunya fever and zika virus (transmitted by the same mosquito) are very similar. They include fever with headache, body and joint pain, prostration, weakness, pain behind the eyes, rash and itchy skin, red spots on the body, nausea , vomiting and abdominal pain. At the sign of these symptoms, the advice is to immediately seek the nearest health unit or service to your residence.

Among the places most favorable to the proliferation of the mosquito are containers exposed to rainwater, such as garbage, gutters and clogged drains, dishes and plant pots, water tanks for animals houses, tree hollows, bromeliads, water tanks and flagstones. However, it is recommended to be aware of potential internal breeding sites, such as handicap toilets, refrigerator and air conditioning water drains, water bottle rack, among others.
