“As of today, the presence of supporters of visiting clubs in the stadiums is prohibited,” Mexican league president Mikel Arriola told a press conference at La Corregidora stadium, where the incidents took place.

The clashes in the stands began in the 63rd minute of a match between Querétaro and Atlas de Guadalajara on Saturday night, when the home team won 1-0, Mexican civil protection services said.

Security officers allowed the public to take refuge on the pitch, forcing the players back into the dressing rooms and forcing the game to be interrupted.

According to the governor of the state of Querétaro, Maurício Kuri, the clashes left at least 26 injured who required hospital treatment, three of them in serious condition.

Following the incidents, the league suspended the three matches scheduled for Sunday, and guaranteed that “those responsible for the lack of security measures in the stadium will be punished in an exemplary manner”.

FIFA, which entrusted the organization of the 2026 World Cup to Mexico, the United States and Canada, condemned the “barbaric incidents” and encouraged local authorities to “quickly bring those responsible to justice”.
