The rise in fuel prices (Diesel and Gasoline) continues and, in this sense, the Government will once again postpone the carbon tax on fuels to avoid the additional increase of five cents.

If confirmed, diesel is expected to rise 14.5 cents, the largest increase on record in a week. The gasoline increase should be about 8 cents.

Diesel and gasoline increase a lot next Monday

Gasoline and diesel prices are expected to rise next Monday. According to SIC, diesel is expected to rise 14.5 cents. If confirmed, it will be the biggest increase ever recorded in a week. The gasoline increase should be about 8 cents.

This is the 10th increase in fuel prices this year and the one that will have the greatest impact on the Portuguese portfolio. The value is not expected to decrease in the near future.

This huge increase is a reflection of the war in Ukraine and the consequent increase in the price of oil on international markets. On Thursday, the price of a barrel of Brent reached 116.8 dollars, a new record since August 2013.

The Assistant Secretary of State for Energy today said the fuel carbon tax update, which the government had frozen until the end of March, will be postponed again. In December, the government published in the Diário da República the ordinance suspending the update of the carbon tax on gasoline and diesel until March 31 of this year, stating that without this measure, fuels would be five cents a liter more expensive at the start of the year.

According to UN projections, more than ten million people could flee Ukraine as a result of the Russian invasion, four million of whom will seek refuge from war in neighboring countries.

UNICEF said half of that total, or around half a million, are children, in a statement in which it expects the numbers to continue to rise rapidly in the coming days.
